MARTY BALLER, rapper from Harlem, New York was born for this. At a young age growing up in the streets, he was inspired by his mother to work hard for what he wants in life. After meeting A$AP Ferg aka The Trap Lord in high school, he was always inspired by him to make music – introducing him to the A$AP Mob movement.
You may have seen him in A$AP Ferg music videos such as Shabba, Work REMIX, East Coast, Nandos, and more – but don’t get it twisted. Although the two may have collaborated on tracks together, MARTY BALLER has his own sound and successful collaborations with artists like Madeintyo, Rich The Kid, Rob Stone, Migos, Smoke DZA and more.
Below I got the chance to ask MARTY BALLER some questions on his new project Baller Nation, meeting A$AP Ferg, his upbringing, inspirations and more.
Now that your new EP – Baller Nation is out, why did you decide to title it the same as your movement – Baller Nation?
I DECIDED TO NAME IT BALLER NATION BECAUSE I NOTICED HOW BIG MY FOLLOWING WAS IN THE WORLD AND I WANTED TO BRING EVERYBODY TOGETHER, AND I FEEL LIKE THE WORD “NATION’ BRINGS US ALL TOGETHER AS ONE.
What have you learned about yourself and sound since your album – Marty GraW?
SINCE MARTYGRAW I’VE GROWN MUSICALLY BEING THAT I’VE BEEN IN DIFFERENT PARTS OF THE WORLD IT GIVES ME A CHANCE TO APPRECIATE IT.
Your EP only came in July, and you already have a couple of music videos for it – Rambo ft. Rich The Kid and Slick Talk ft. Rob $tone. How did you link up together with the two and how did creating the music videos come to fruition?
I LINKED UP WITH RICH THE KIDD JUST FROM HIM BEING IN NEW YORK THROUGH MUTUAL FRIENDS AND I HAD THE SONG RAMBO FOR 2 MONTHS, AND I THOUGHT HE’D FIT PERFECT ON IT. SINCE RICH THE KID WAS ALREADY IN NEW YORK, WE SHOT IT IN MY NEIGHBOURHOOD IN HARLEM…SHOUT OUT TO BOOGZBAKED. ME AND ROB STONE MADE SLICK TALK ON TOUR WHILE I WAS TOURING WITH FERG BEFORE ANY DRAMA HE HAD WITH ANY ARTIST. THE MUSIC VIDEOS CAME ABOUT VERY RAW, SHOT BY CHASE/GURU MEDI. FLEW TO SAN DIEGO TO SHOOT SLICK TALK WITH ROB STONE WHILE ON THE FUTURE TOUR.
Being a huge supporting role in the A$AP Mob and known for being A$AP Ferg’s protege – how did you two come together initially for those who may not know and decide to make music together?
ME AND FERG GREW UP IN THE SAME NEIGHBOURHOOD ALL OUR LIVES. WE WENT TO THE SAME JUNIOR HIGH SCHOOL AND HIGH SCHOOL, SO HE WAS ALWAYS AN INSPIRATION IN MY LIFE… HE THAN INTRODUCED ME TO ASAP MOB…WE ALWAYS MAKE MUSIC, I GUESS THAT WAS JUST A HARLEM THING.
Stating in your new EP on the first track: “Last year being broke, first year being rich,”how does it feel to be making a living off your music and merchandise?
ITS STILL A GRIND, IM NOT WHERE I WANT TO BE YET BUT IM ON MY WAY THERE. TIME WILL REVEAL ITSELF..
In the same track “First Quarter” – you reflect on your past experiences and come-up, along with the hate that comes with your success. What would you tell your fans how you deal with others talking down on your name?
I JUST KEEP WORKING AND PUTTING OUT WORK. I FEEL LIKE IF THEY CONSTANTLY SEE AND HEAR ME THEN THEY’LL HAVE NO CHOICE BUT TO RESPECT IT.
How has growing up in the streets and being able to adapt to multiple situations inspire you to tell your story through rap music while acting, dancing and producing?
GROWING UP IN THE STREETS PLAYS A MAJOR ROLE IN MY MUSIC IT SHOWS THE STRUGGLE, AMBITION AND WHERE I WANNA BE IN THE FUTURE. IT SHOWS THE GRIND.
Speaking of acting, I saw that you acted to promote Chewy grinders. How did that opportunity manifest for you?
I PROMOTED “CHEWY GRINDER” MY FRIEND LANE PUT ME ON TO THIS COMPANY HE WAS WORKING WITH THAT WAS A GOOD EXPERIENCE, IM LOOKING FORWARD TO ACTING IN THE FUTURE
What have you learned about being in the music industry and do you feel like you have to have tunnel vision to avoid those hating on you and wanting to see you fail?
LIKE I SAID BEFORE JUST KEEP WORKING.
What inspires you to keep striving to make money, and create music?
MY MOTHER WORKING EVERYDAY INSPIRED ME TO KEEP MAKING MUSIC AND MY GRANDMOTHER TOO.
What’s next for Marty Baller? Anything you can hint towards for the near future.
NEXT FOR MARTY BALLER IS NEW MERCH,NEW MUSIC,NEW MONEY.
